Pr. Thomas Nyakundi attended Tombe High School in Nyamira County for his secondary school education. In 1992, he responded to the pastoral calling and joined Tanzania Adventist College, where he earned a diploma in theology. He later attended Bugema University in 1999 and completed a bachelor's degree in theology. Between 2007 and 2012, he pursued higher studies at Andrews University, USA, where he obtained both his Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees.
Pr. Nyakundi began his pastoral ministry in 1994, serving in several districts where he guided church growth and facilitated the establishment of new Sabbath schools. He was ordained into the gospel ministry in 2004. In 2013, he was elected to serve as the executive secretary of the Nyamira Conference, an administrative leadership role. In 2015, he was elected president of the same conference, a position he served faithfully until the conference grew enough to warrant subdivision, resulting in the creation of Nyamira West Field. Following this success, the constituency appointed him as the first president of the newly created field.
In the 2025 church session, he was re-elected to continue serving in this capacity, a role he presently holds.
He is married to Ruth, and together they are blessed with three grown-up children.
